    Stabilization Care Doctor

    Role Purpose

    • The Stabilization Care Doctor will ensure quality of services in the stabilization centre (CMAM programme) through strengthening capacities on the clinical management of SAM and facilitating integration of services related to newborn and child health.
    • With the support of the Senior Nutrition Advisor, He/She will oversee the day-to-day activities/services provided to admitted cases (and Caregivers) at the Stabilization Centre and will generally be responsible for documentation and stock-management of commodities, medicines/consumables and data tools.
    • He/She will strengthen relationship between Hospital Management Board, other Partners and Save the Children.

    Key Areas of Accountability
    Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager, the Stabilization Care Doctor will;

    Provision of high quality care to complicated SAM cases:

    • Provide clinical care to complicated cases of SAM admitted at the Stabilization Centre (SC).
    • Ensure clinical care provided at the SC is in accordance with the National guidelines for In-patient Management of SAM.
    • Mentor and provide on-the-job training on stabilization care and documentation to nurses and other health workers deployed to the SC to ensure:
    • Respect of approved protocols for management of  acute malnutrition
    • Correct use of programme monitoring and evaluation (recording) tools
    • Appropriate use of resources, stock control and ordering procedures.

    Programme Management and Documentation:

    • Monitor the In-patient Management of SAM.
    • Monitor screening of complications in Save the Children-supported OTPs.
    • Supervise the use of medicines, medical supplies, nutrition-related commodities and data tools in the SC.
    • Participate in the development and review of programme monitoring and evaluation tools where necessary
    • Ensure timely collection, compilation and analysis of quality data as well as production of quantitative and qualitative reports regarding all SC activities
    • Produce case studies related to inpatient care, at least one per quarter or as per line manager’s request
    • Evaluate regularly the impact of the activities and propose changes for improvement
    • Prepare weekly and monthly activities’ reports, and any other ad hoc report that may be required

    Support the supply chain management and Forecast for Medicines, Medical supplies, Nutrition Commodities (F-75, F-100, Resomal and RUTF) and Data tools:

    • Monitor the stock of Commodities, medicines, medical supplies : calculate needs, decide quantities to be delivered to the Stabilization Centre,
    • Support  procurement in conjunction with the Nutrition in Emergency Advisor, Logistics and Warehouse Officer
    • Plan logistics and materials needs for the SC.

    Ensure Coordination and Collaboration with other programmes related to ewborn and child health (immunization, HIV, malaria, newborn care, etc) and with relevant authorities at both State and LGA levels:

    • Participate in stakeholder meetings on crosscutting health issues.
    • Facilitate integration of services for a holistic approach of SAM by working in collaboration with partners
    • Hold regular meetings (document minutes) with MoH department officials (Hospitals Management Board, AIDS control agency, Malaria Programme, etc.) to discuss crosscutting issues in CMAM
    • Promote integrated care in the SC.

    Institutional capacity building:

    • Organize and facilitate trainings for health staff, including SNO, LGA team and facility staff
    • Provide on the job training and mentoring for staff in SC to ensure:
    • Respect of approved protocols for management of  acute malnutrition
    • Correct use of programme monitoring and evaluation (recording) tools
    • Appropriate use of resources, stock control and ordering procedures
    • Hold regular meetings (document minutes) with MoH department officials (Hospitals Management Board, AIDS control agency, Malaria Programme, etc.) to discuss crosscutting issues in CMAM
    • Promote integrated care in the SC.

    Representation and relationships:

    • Participate in Nutrition related Meetings, Seminars and Workshops and feed information acquired back into programming.
    • Work and strengthen relationship with Borno State Ministry of Health and Hospital Management Board, UNICEF and other partners implementing CMAM and Stabilization Care in the State.
    • Work closely with other thematic teams in Nigeria Country office and the Borno State offices.
    • Other - Other ad hoc tasks as requested by Line Manager.

    Skills, Experience and Education

    • Medical Degree (MB.BS; MB, BCh) from a recognized/accredited University in Nigeria
    • At least three years post-graduation experience
    • Previous experience with other local and international NGOs
    • Experience in Nutrition and in community based programmes
    • Training and experience on treatment of acute malnutrition
    • Advocacy and logistics experience
    • Computer literacy (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
    • Fluency in English and Hausa, spoken and written
    • Ability to work in partnership with government and other NGO staff
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work within a team setting
    • Independence, adaptability and flexibility with good workload management, multitasking and ability to meet tight deadlines
    • Excellent communication skills

    Additional Qualifications:

    • Work experience in health/public health and or in a health/public health organisation, including as a trainer.
    • Experience with providing institutional support and technical assistance to development partners, government/community institutions

    Additional skills:

    • Ability to work effectively both independently (with minimal supervision) and as a member of a team
    • Commitment to gender equity, child rights, community empowerment, and grassroots development approaches
    • Effective planning and organising skill
    • Effective interpersonal skills - oral and written communication skills
