    Compressor Operator

    Summary of Duties

    • A Compressor Operator operates piston or rotary type air-compressing equipment. An employee in this class maintains, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to compressors, pneumatic tools, and auxiliary equipment, and does related work. Compressor Operator operates air compressors, water pumps, and pneumatic tools.
    • He/She does not perform extensive repairs on the equipment. However, a Compressor Operator is responsible for daily preventive maintenance, operating adjustments, and minor emergency field repairs.
    • He/She usually receives specific assignments from a supervisor.
    • However, he/she may work independently in advance of the main crew.
    • He/She may oversee workers who are operating pneumatic tools to make sure the workers are taking safety precautions.
    • He/she may drive a compressor truck and may operate pneumatic tools, and work on large vessels.

    Responsibilities

    • Operates gasoline, diesel, or electric powered air compressors that power pneumatic tools such as:
      • Pavement breakers, jackhammers, and chipping guns;
      • Tampers and stompers;
      • Winches and hoists;
      • Hammers, saws, and boring tools;
      • Sandblasters;
      • Water pumps;
    • Makes sure air compressor and pneumatic tools are operating safely by: Checking fuel, water supply, and oil level in the engine and compressor;
    • Monitoring oil pressure, water temperature, and control valves on the compressor;
    • Checking rock drill oil level in the pneumatic tools, and air-line lubricators and coolers.
    • Cleans air filters and may change oil filters;
    • Oils, greases, and makes minor repairs to pneumatic tools such as;
    • Replacing worn or broken springs and safety chains;
    • Freeing frozen triggers;
    • Installing couplings and fittings on air hoses Changing bits, gads, steels and other cutting tools;
    • May oversee other workers who are operating pneumatic tools;
    • May operate pneumatic tools, pumps, and auxiliary equipment;
    • May use pipe locators;
    • May direct a small crew in blowing pulling wires into underground conduits;
    • May drive a compressor truck or truck-mounted pneumatic paving demolisher;
    • May perform unskilled work as needed on the job;
    • May occasionally be assigned to other duties for training purposes or to meet technological changes or emergencies.

    Qualifications / Knowledge
    A good knowledge of:

    • Interested candidates should possess an OND / SSCE qualification.
    • Operation and maintenance of various types of air compressors;
    • Operation, adjustment, and maintenance of pneumatic tools and auxiliary equipment.
