    External Facilitator for MHGAP Training

    General overview

    Over the years, Médecins du Monde, a campaigning medical organization committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies. Those working for this independent organization do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations.

    MdM currently works in many countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced persons, promoting sexual and reproductive health, combating HIV, and reducing the harm and risks associated with drug use, crises and conflicts.

    Starting 2016 and up till now Medecins du Monde has been intervening in Nigeria (Maiduguri and Damboa). MdM’s provides a comprehensive PHC health package that includes MHPSS. The PHC’s are situated in IDP camps but the services are accessible to both IDP and host communities.

    Objective:

    The Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) was launched by WHO in 2008 with the aim of scaling up care for individuals with mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) conditions across all levels of care. The mhGAP training aims at building the capacity of non-specialized healthcare staff in the early detection and management of mental health conditions.

    The general objectives of the mhGAP facilitation are:

    • Build the capacity of MdM’s healthcare providers, at the primary healthcare level on mhGAP-IG, to improve their capacity on assessment and management of mental health priorities.
    • Provide the participants with relevant and necessary tools to enable the integration of mental health intervention in their clinical practice.
    • Provide basic skills on the supervision process of the mhGAP intervention program.

    Deliverables

    • Conduct 1 mhGAP training course for a period of 5 days, targeting MdM primary healthcare staff on the prioritized modules
    • Conduct role plays and case simulation for all the prioritized modules
    • Provide feedback and practical solutions to questions about the application of the skills thought in the modules
    • Apply and analyze the mhGAP standard Pre-Posttest evaluation.
    • Provide 1 summary of the training evaluation report

    Education/ Experience

    • An experienced psychiatrist with strong technical skills in WHO mhGAP-IG training package.
    • A certified mhGAP trainer by WHO
    • Experience in public mental health approaches, prevention and management models of mental health and psychosocial support
    • Strong training and supervision skills especially of healthcare providers.
    • Experience in the provision of similar tasks in a humanitarian emergency context
    • Excellent understanding of MHPSS interventions in line with the IASC guidelines in emergency settings
    • Knowledge of cultural perception and approaches to mental health issues in the North-East Nigeria
