    Fiber Engineer

    Job Description

    • The Fiber Optic Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic networks to ensure efficient and reliable service delivery. This role is crucial in the expansion and maintenance of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) infrastructure, ensuring high-quality connectivity for customers.

    Key Responsibilities
    Fiber Optic Network Design and Planning:

    • Design and develop fiber optic network layouts, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home), FTTx (Fiber to the X), and backbone networks.
    • Conduct site surveys and feasibility studies to determine the optimal placement of fiber optic cables and equipment.
    • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation for fiber optic network projects.

    Installation and Commissioning:

    • Oversee the installation, splicing, and testing of fiber optic cables, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.
    • Configure and install networking equipment, such as optical line terminals (OLTs), optical network terminals (ONTs), and routers.
    • Perform end-to-end testing, including OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) testing, power meter testing, and light source testing.

    Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

    • Monitor the performance of fiber optic networks and diagnose issues using appropriate testing tools and equipment.
    • Conduct routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of fiber optic cables, connectors, and network components.
    • Respond to and resolve network outages and disruptions in a timely manner to minimize downtime for customers.

    Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate records of fiber optic network configurations, installations, and maintenance activities.
    • Prepare technical reports, as-built documentation, and maintenance logs.
    • Provide regular updates and reports to the Network Operations Manager on project progress and network performance.

    Project Management:

    • Plan, schedule, and manage fiber optic installation and maintenance projects, ensuring timely completion within budget.
    • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless execution of fiber optic projects.
    • Ensur that all work is carried out in accordance with safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies.

    Customer Support:

    • Provide technical support to customers and field technicians regarding fiber optic connectivity issues.
    • Assist in resolving customer complaints related to network performance and service quality.
    • Conduct on-site visits to troubleshoot and resolve customer issues when necessary.

    Quality Assurance:

    • Implement and enforce quality control measures to ensure the reliability and performance of fiber optic networks.
    • Regularly review and update technical procedures and standards to align with best practices and technological advancements.

    Training and Development:

    • Provide training and guidance to junior engineers and technicians on fiber optic installation, splicing, and maintenance techniques.
    • Stay updated with the latest developments in fiber optic technology and industry trends.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
    • 3+ years of experience in fiber optic network design, installation, and maintenance, preferably within the ISP industry.
    • Proficiency in fiber optic splicing, testing, and troubleshooting techniques.
    • Experience with fiber optic equipment, such as OTDRs, fusion splicers, power meters, and light sources.
    • Strong understanding of FTTH, FTTx, and other fiber optic network architectures.
    • Familiarity with networking protocols, standards, and equipment.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Certifications in fiber optics, such as Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent.
    • Experience with GIS mapping software and network design tools.
    • Knowledge of IP networking, routing, and switching.

    Work Environment:

    • Fieldwork involving site visits, installation, and troubleshooting of fiber optic networks.
    • Office-based work for network design, documentation, and reporting.
    • Some travel may be required to different project sites and customer locations.
    • Occasional on-call work may be required to address urgent network issues.
