    "No Means No" (NMNW) Activity Instructor

    Background

    • The "No Means No" (NMNW) Activity is an orphan and vulnerable children program preventive model of intervention geared towards reducing sexual violence and the risk of HIV transmission among adolescents.
    • The NMNW Activity is a curriculum-based capacity-building session for adolescent girls and boys aged 10-14 developed to enable adolescent girls to develop verbal, mental, and physical skills to be able to defend themselves against any unwanted advances or rape while the adolescent boys will also be trained to stand up for girls. The NMNW approach combines 3 components (Prevention, Intervention & Recovery) to form a comprehensive dual-gender intervention which includes 8 hours of NMNW empowerment self-defense classes, network referral systems, and Survivors in Recovery Anonymous (SIRA) aftercare support.
    • It emphasizes early recognition of boundary testing, negotiation, diffusion tactics, and verbal assertiveness. The instructors would be responsible for mobilizing their communities for change and teaching adolescent girls aged 10-14 years mental, verbal, and physical skills/strategies to prevent sexual assault and other forms of Gender Based Violence, which in turn reduces their risk of contracting HIV.
    • ECEWS will implement the NMNW activity in both Delta and Osun States. Delta State will implement for boys while Osun State will implement for girls.

    Position Description

    • The instructors would be responsible for mobilizing their communities for change and teaching adolescent girls aged 10-14 years how to enhance their mental, verbal, and physical skills to be able to stand up for themselves, especially against individuals who may want to violate them.
    • NMNW Instructors will go through intensive training to learn the proven NMNW activity strategies of violence prevention, intervention, and recovery.
    • During this training, instructors will master a 12-hour curriculum for adolescents that imparts mental, verbal, and physical skills and knowledge of human rights.
    • They will be responsible for implementing the NMNW curriculum with adolescents aged 10- 14 years in prioritized communities and LGAs.

    Position Responsibilities

    • Must be available to participate in training to learn the NMNW Activity curriculum and prevention intervention.
    • Work in a pair of two to implement the NMNW curriculum with adolescents and maintain follow- up with participants.
    • Contribute to the development of a comprehensive referral network of prevention and aftercare resources and providers.
    • Set up and maintain Survivors in Recovery Anonymous (SIRA) meetings.
    • Conduct and collect basic M&E data from participants and report in a timely manner.
    • Liaise with local child safety, gender-based violence organizations, stakeholders, government sources, and schools to enhance violence prevention.
    • Participates in monthly review meetings for all instructors.
    • The Responsibilities (Above) are not intended to be all-inclusive. The employee will also perform other related tasks as required and will be responsible for reporting and communicating the progress and achievement of the specific assigned tasks.

    Minimum Recruitment Standard

    • Instructors MUST be around the age of 25-35 years.
    • Instructors MUST be residents in the target State/ LGAs of intervention.
    • Candidates should possess a minimum of an OND qualification.
    • English Language – Must be proficient in English, specifically able to read and speak.
    • Knowledge of the local language is important to ease communication with the adolescent groups if required.
    • Available for weeks of training.
    • Available to implement NMNW activity for adolescent Girls or Boys as the case may be.
    • Males can only apply as Boys Instructors and Females can only apply as Girls Instructor
    • Proficient in the use of a computer, and Microsoft suites (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint).
    • Applicants must be familiar with gender-based violence and its prevention, knowledgeable about sexual and reproductive health, have the emotional intelligence to be able to work with adolescents, and must be comfortable leading or facilitating group sessions.
    • Critical Thinking – Able to observe and synthesize the pros and cons of a situation and use learning to implement the best course of action.
    • Organizational – Able to juggle competing priorities, interests, training, schedules, timelines, and work-related arrangements.
    • Tenacity – Able to not give up and find ways around, over, under, and through seemingly impossible situations.
    • Effective Communicator – Especially verbally
    • Reliability – Excellent in punctuality and consistency
