    Programme Intern

    Background

Over the years, there has been increasing evidence that lack of leadership, efficient and good governance impedes economic and human development. Across African countries, this has led to an erosion of trust in democratic institutions, shallow levels of social capital, a stalling institution-building process and more generally, a slow transitioning process from country to nation. Corruption remains pervasive as ruling elites live flamboyant lifestyles, looting public funds at the expense of ordinary citizens. Very often, even the minimum expectations of citizens towards their government are seldom met. The range of unmet citizens’ expectation from governance has kept on growing wider and deeper. It is upon these sad realities that the School of Politics was founded to raise value-based leaders, with the ultimate view of changing the narrative in the political sphere.
    Vision

We envision a Nigeria with competent and responsible public Leadership firmly based on ethical principles and dedicated to serving the common good for the benefit of all. Our vision is drawn from the understanding that, when governance delivers for the people, it will: Bring improvement in the quality of life; Safeguard and uphold the dignity of life of all citizens; Protect citizens from violence. Maintain law and order for a secure and stable environment; Protect against internal threats such as racketeering, intimidation, violence, and corruption, and defend the country from any external threat to our way of life; Create the Enabling Environment for Private Enterprise to thrive, climb out of Poverty and Prosper; Lead in legal, policy, regulatory frameworks and enforcement underpinned by the rule of law; Act as the provider of goods and services that individuals and businesses cannot provide for themselves: quality education by means of creating quality infrastructure such as housing and roads; delivering essential services like running water and electricity to each home and telecommunication; Act in accordance with the 21st century government expectation of being an investor in talent, research, and innovation; and Build trust in and among citizens for requisite social capital and cohesion.
