    Economic Assistant

    Summary:

    The U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the Economic Assistant position in the Economic Section. The U.S. Mission in Nigeria supports Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA). All genders are welcome to apply.

    Duties

    The incumbent gathers information from published sources and contacts across Nigeria. Incumbent provides research, drafting, and analytical reporting on the full range of environment, science, technology, and health (ESTH), intellectual property rights, youth and women's economic engagement and economic issues.

    Position provides external and internal event organization, government liaison work, and serves as the grants officer representative for ESTH small grants, advises grantees and potential grantees on State Department procedures and priorities.  Supports Economic Section under the supervision of the ESTH Officer.

    Education Requirements: University degree in Economics, Business, International Relations, Environmental Science/Conservation or Public Administration is required.

    Experience: Minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in the field of environmental and/or scientific issues, economic or international affairs is required.

    Job Knowledge: 

    • Incumbent must know roles and responsibilities of key Mission offices and personnel; knowledge of USG and Mission priorities in areas of economic, environment, science, and health policy are required. Knowledge of basic administrative policies and procedures is required.
    • With regard to host country: Knowledge of key institutions and persons involved in environment, science, and health policy are required, knowledge of policy-making environment (how policy is made and carried out in the various contexts) is require. Familiarity with country-wide environmental issues (e.g. water resources, biodiversity, clean energy, fisheries, sustainable agriculture, scientific research, climate change/variability, etc.) is required.
    • Independent knowledge including familiarity with international environment, science, and health policy issues (e.g. current threats/challenges, major international conventions, accepted concepts in environmental management) is required.
    • Familiarity with principal international institutions: U.S. government agencies, UN agencies, international NGOs; and familiarity with research methodologies and procedures relevant to environmental issues (e.g. scientific method, literature research, basic statistical analysis) is required.

    Skills And Abilities: 

    • Ability to develop and maintain a broad range of contacts in ESTH and intellectual property rights communities is required. 
    • Ability to carry out moderately difficult research projects and prepare well-organized analytical and factual reports is required.  Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, internet research and email protocols are required.  Ability to read and assess charts and graphs is required. 
    • Ability to analyze simple project budgets for accuracy and logic is required.

    Safety Program Coordinator

    Summary:

    The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, Nigeria is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the temporary position of Safety Program Coordinator in the Overseas Building Operations Office (OBO). The U.S. Mission in Nigeria supports Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA).     Duties

    Working under the Construction Manager/ Project Director of the Overseas Building Operations (OBO) project team, the Safety Program Coordinator provides professional expertise and guidance relating to site safety and health issues during all phases of construction, including site development, excavation, foundation, superstructure, exterior walls, mechanical and electrical systems, and interior finish work for the New Consulate Compound (NCC) Project. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with U.S. Department of State as well as host country construction safety and health regulations.             

    Education Requirements: University degree in safety management, occupational health and safety, environmental safety, construction, engineering or architecture is required.

    Experience: Minimum of five (5) years in construction with experience in occupational safety or industrial hygiene is required.

    Job Knowledge: 

    • Thorough knowledge of construction safety management principles, practices and procedures. Knowledge of OSHA construction and safety regulations.
    • Principles and practices of evaluating and implementing safety programs. Knowledge of the local codes of electrical, mechanical, structural, and International Building Code (IBC). Knowledge of local construction policies and local labor laws. Specialized knowledge in construction health, safety requirements including accident prevention, laws and regulations applicable to employee safety and occupational health, occupational health and loss prevention programs, industrial safety practices, methods of assessing safety hazards and controls, and techniques for conducting accident investigations.
