    Program / Department Summary

    • Mercy Corps has been present in Nigeria since 2012, focusing its interventions on humanitarian assistance, economic development, and conflict mitigation. With the ongoing insurgency in Northeast Nigeria causing the displacement of millions of individuals, Mercy Corps started its humanitarian response in 2014 to address the rising humanitarian needs.
    • As the crisis has persisted, Mercy Corps’ strategy has also expanded to address the root causes of the conflict and seek to build the long term resilience of communities with integrated programs focusing on governance, the recovery of markets and livelihoods, social cohesion and social protection, youth empowerment, and local conflict management.

    General Position Summary

    • Work under the supervision of, and in collaboration with the IT Systems Administrator (IT Officer) to monitor and maintain all IT Systems in Mercy Corps Gombe, Yola, Damaturu office.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Conduct himself / herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
    • Read, understand and regularly update the Mercy Corps IT Conduct IT orientations for new staff (Also periodically conduct refresher training) on the IT Policy. Monitor user activities to ensure adherence to these policies.
    • Responsible use and confidentiality of any information identified as sensitive.
    • Regularly monitor the health and update status of Operating systems and Antivirus on each computer on the network and ensure a virus, malware-free network.
    • Assist the IT Systems Administrator in establishing a clear, back-up policy for the Mercy Corps office and undertake the necessary steps for this activity including designing a schedule and materials list. Ensure back-up and archives are made and stored as scheduled.
    • Under the guidance of the IT Systems Administrator, undertake the repairing and maintaining of LAN-s, internet systems and general IT maintenance.
    • Assist with the repair of computers and IT equipment at a local level, when possible.
    • Maintain an efficient Local Area Network for Mercy Corps office.
    • Work with the IT Systems Administrator (and Asset Controller) to document and maintain all IT equipment / systems information to include but not be limited to (specifications, system profiles, MAC address, IP Addresses, Network diagrams etc.).

    Security:

    • Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.
    • Proactively ensure that team members operate in a secure and safe environment and are aware of IT policies.

    Organizational Learning:

    • As part of our commitment to organizational learning and in support of our understanding that learning organizations are more effective, efficient and relevant to the communities they serve, we expect all team members to commit 5% of their time to learning activities that benefit Mercy Corps as well as themselves.

    Accountability:

    Knowledge and Experience

    • A minimum of 6 months experience in information technology systems (IT).
    • A relevant University Degree in Computer Sciences is desirable.
    • Experience in both hardware and software requirements in local area networking (LAN);
    • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members is required.
    • Ability to trouble-shoot and maintain both wireless and cable connections is required.
    • Must understand, follow and implement existing policies on IT equipment use and best practices.

    Working Conditions

    • The intern will be expected to work 40 hours a week
    • The intern will be paid a monthly allowance of N100,000

    Humanitarian Analyst

    Location: Maiduguri, Nigeria (with travel to field / project locations)

    Works Directly With: Program Management (Nigeria), Security team (Nigeria), Field Management (Nigeria), various external stakeholders

    Program / Department Summary

    • Mercy Corps Nigeria implements a variety of programs with the vision of a Nigeria in which all people are empowered, engaged, resilient and secure. Programme work covers the following sectors: economic development, livelihoods/food security, adolescent girls & boys’ empowerment, financial resilience, conflict mitigation and humanitarian response. Common themes include community engagement, inclusive development, gender, and working in partnership with local government, the private sector and civil society actors.
    • Nigeria is a complex, sophisticated society – and the crisis in its north-east has many dimensions. Mercy Corps is committed to the goal of better understanding crisis contexts in order to deliver better impact for the people and communities we serve.
    • Mercy Corps’ Crisis Analytics teams aggregate and analyze data to improve decision making and access in complex crises. The teams support our programming in Syria, Libya, Democratic Republic of Congo and other locations. The teams directly contribute to data-driven decision making by layering information from primary sources, open sources and responders’ programmatic data, where it is analysed by subject matter experts and data scientists. This analysis is grounded in Mercy Corps’ status as an operational NGO, keeping products constructive and relevant.
    • Typical products and services range from informal briefings to weekly products, contributions to risk assessments, in-depth assessment of the political economy of defined geography, deep-dives on specific thematics, etc., ranging in themes from conflict to market systems to governance, in line with programmatic needs.

    General Position Summary

    • The Analyst is expected to bring and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the dynamics of the Nigerian context. The Analyst works with the Team Leader to contribute to briefings to stakeholders, and so is able to present professionally and distil the ongoing analytical outputs for easy consumption.
    • S/he will leverage their understanding of the humanitarian and development sector, and their ability to meaningfully engage with the Mercy Corps Nigeria programme teams, to identify trends and issues for the team to monitor and explore. These outputs will improve the ability of Mercy Corps and the wider humanitarian community to operate with impact.
    • The Analyst will principally focus on supporting programming in Nigeria’s north-eastern BAY states, with due consideration given to national and regional issues.
    • The Analyst will have principal responsibility for the drafting of regular, periodic analytical products. The structure and intent of these products will be set by the Team Leader, but the Analyst will be required to produce relevant, high-qualitycontent that meets the needs of audiences.
    • This quality will come from experience in analysis, data collection, local networks, and a collaborative and open-minded approach to problem-solving. The Analyst will adopt a flexible approach and a willingness to use non-traditional tools and information sources in order to generate insights within a dynamic environment. The Analyst will contribute to the creation and utilization of a network of field researchers in difficult to access areas of Nigeria.
    • The Analyst will be equally comfortable giving guidance on negotiating access as understanding the relevance of regional economic trends.
    • The Analyst will attend programme meetings as directed, to share knowledge and develop an understanding of the information needs of teams.
    • The Analyst will be based in Maiduguri, Borno State and undertake regular travel across the northeast, including deep-field sites, in order to ensure comprehensive findings are developed that represent the BAY states.

    Essential Job Responsibilities
    Systems and Reporting:

      within Nigeria
    • Demonstrated capacity for analysis that supports decision making
    • Experience living and/or working in the north eastern states of Nigeria
    • Demonstrated high capacity for writing in English on technical subjects
    • Able to convey complex information to a variety of audiences
    • Ability to build and maintain networks of information sources across different geographic locations, sectors
      and perspectives.
    • Willingness to work and travel in often difficult and insecure environments.
    • Competency in internet and Microsoft Office systems including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

    Field Researcher

    • Nigeria Crisis Analytics (NCAT) works with programmatic teams, the wider humanitarian community, and other stakeholders to provide actionable research and analysis to inform the ongoing response. The goal of NCAT is to bring a nuanced understanding of the context to relevant actors and help shape thinking on everything from localized security and programming to larger-scale program design and policymaking.

    Position Objectives

    • Under the supervision of the NCAT Team Lead and Field Coordinator, the community Field Researcher will be responsible for:
      • The day-to-day situation monitoring in their location and reporting on access, displacement, humanitarian needs, market prices, response efforts, relevant conflict incidents, infrastructure, historical economic drivers, social relationships, perceptions, informal dispute resolution mechanisms, local authorities, power dynamics, and laws/regulations,
      • The verification or monitoring (if possible) of partners’ projects activities at activities sites, including beneficiary verification, monitoring of delivery and distribution of commodities and submission of routine reports to the M&E focal point, and conducting field visits to carry out qualitative and quantitative data collection along with field observations and consultations with key stakeholders and Mercy Corps staff.
    • The Field Researcher will receive training on identifying relevant information, and collecting it in a responsible, accurate and sustainable manner. Relevant information would typically include economic activity and prices of goods; the structure of local communities; relative happiness or otherwise of people within the community; people moving out of or into the local area; etc.
    • The Field Researcher will receive weekly updates on the priorities for information collection. They will occasionally be asked to confirm whether an incident reported in rumours or the media was accurate.

    Essential Job Responsibilities
    The Field Researcher will:

    • Conduct interviews with key informants
    • Respond to requests for information
    • Proactively identify relevant information
    • Support triangulation and confirmation of events
    • Attend all required team meetings
    • Support in the design and planning of data collection work
    • Draft thorough qualitative notes and field journals following any data collection activity
    • Support in writing NCAT products

    Regular Field Researcher Outputs:

    • Draft sections of Monthly Reports.
    • Draft sections for Situational Reports.
    • Collaborate on Thematic Reports.
    • Incorporate and overlay humanitarian access, security, and humanitarian needs data.
    • Gather, validate, and organize data from several different data streams.
    • Qualitative notes and field journal entries.

    Timeframe / Schedule:

    • This is a full-time 3-month engagement with the possibility of extension contingent on performance and funding.

    • Field Researcher will work closely with: NCAT Analyst/Field Coordinator; Program Teams; Field Managers; Security Team

    Required Experience & Skills

    • Possess a Bachelor's Degree in relevant fields.
    • At least two years’ experience in the aid and development sector, with a level of experience in a conflict-affected environment;
    • Functional knowledge of Excel and data collection software (ONA, ODK, etc.)
    • Extensive experience living / working in northeast Nigeria
    • Knowledge of local languages, including Hausa and Kanuri; knowledge of other languages is a plus.
    • Data analysis experience a plus
    • Experience organizing and maintaining databases, cleaning data
    • Competency in Internet and Microsoft Office systems including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; knowledge of ArcGIS, Tableau, and PowerBI is a plus.
    • Fluency in English, both written and spoken is required; previous experience writing reports is a plus.
