    Entomological Consultants

    Malaria Consortium is sourcing for qualified consultants that will support the baseline entomological studies in selected sites in Ondo State.

    Purpose/Scope of the assignment

    The purpose of this terms of reference (TOR) is to engage research personnel that will carry out a baseline entomological studies in selected sites in Ondo State.

    The survey will be used to gather baseline data on insecticide resistance and biting habits of Anopheles vectors in Ondo State. The baseline data will be used for assessing any future changes in insecticide resistance levels and indoor and outdoor biting habits of vectors following an ITN distribution campaign.

    We are looking for consultants for the following positions:

    Position 1: Entomology Team Leaders

    Number of positions: 2                  

    Experience: 3 Years’ Experience

    Location: LGAs Ondo State

    Duration: 35 days

    Activity Timeline: December 2021 – January 2022

    Roles of the Entomologist team leader

    • Leads the entomology team at the assigned study site.
    • Conducts insecticide susceptibility tests using the CDC bottle assay method.
    • Coordinates and supervises hourly collection of mosquitoes using CDC light traps as a proxy for human landing collection.
    • Identifies collected mosquitoes morphologically to species or species complex level.
    • Packs and labels collected mosquitoes and stores them dry in silica gel until the specimens are shipped for further laboratory analysis.
    • Resolves any issues reported by team members.
    • Reports to Malaria Consortium’s entomologist.
    • Ensures that all data are accurately collected and uploaded or stored according to guidelines.
    • Will be required to attend training prior to survey.
    • Writes reports related to activities of the team, including achievements, challenges and recommendations.

    Qualifications and experience

    • A post-graduate degree in medical entomology.
    • At least 3 years’ experience in entomological studies for malaria research and control.
    • Demonstrated report writing skills.
    • Good knowledge of the Yoruba and/or Ijaw languages.

    Position 2: Entomology Technician

    Number of positions: 2                  

    Experience: 2 Years’ Experience

    Location: LGAs Ondo the State

    Duration: 34 days

    Activity Timeline: December 2021 – January 2022

    Roles of the Entomology technician

    • Assists the team leader to conduct susceptibility tests and CDC light trap collections.
    • Rears mosquito larvae for resistance studies and ensures that adequate number of adult mosquitoes of the required age are ready for susceptibility tests.
    • Assists the entomology team leader to conduct insecticide susceptibility tests using the CDC bottle assay method.
    • Assists the entomology team leader to coordinate and supervise the hourly collection of mosquitoes using CDC light traps as a proxy for human landing collection.
    • Identifies collected mosquitoes morphologically to species or species complex level.
    • Packs and labels collected mosquitoes and stores them dry in silica gel until the specimens are shipped for further laboratory analysis.
    • Ensures that all materials and equipment are in place to conduct the field studies and kept in good working condition afterwards.
    • Supervises collection of mosquito larvae.
    • Will be required to attend training prior to survey.

    Qualification & Experience

    • A post-graduate degree in medical entomology.
    • Experience in entomological studies for malaria research and control.
    • Demonstrated report writing skills.
    • Excellent knowledge of the Yoruba and/or Ijaw languages.

    Position 3: Entomology Assistant

    Number of positions: 36                

    Location: LGAs Ondo the State

    Duration: 13 days

    Activity Timeline: December 2021 – January 2022

    Roles of the Entomology assistant

    • Assists the entomology team leader and technician in all field activities.
    • Collects mosquito larvae for insecticide resistance studies.
    • Collects mosquitoes using CDC light traps indoors and outdoors.
    • Will sleep under insecticide-treated nets indoors and outdoors during hourly collection of mosquitoes using CDC light traps.
    • Ensures that hourly collections are kept in separate and properly labelled cups or pots.
    • Ensures that all mosquito collection data are recorded accurately.
    • Will be required to attend training prior to survey.
    • Reports to the entomology technician or the team leader any issues and helps to solve problems.

    Qualifications and experience

    • OND/HND/BSc holder in health science or related background.
    • Good knowledge of the English language.
    • Excellent proficiency in languages spoken in the study community, and proficiency in Yoruba and Ijaw languages.
    • Must be from the local community or the selected local government area.
