    Main Objective and Responsibility of the Position

    • Provide obstetrical care to pregnant women and their babies, doing follow up before, during and after delivery, according to MSF obstetrical and reproductive health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring standards and under supervision of a specialist doctor, in order to ensure their health conditions and avoid post-delivery complications.

    General Accountabilities

    • Ensuring the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC 1 and CEmONC 2), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, reproductive tract infections and Fistula care in accordance with MSF Reproductive Core Package of Activities and reinforce the implementation of standardised protocols.
    • Where PMTCT is implemented, ensuring implementation of the PMTCT protocol in the ANC/delivery and PNC consultations (pre counselling, test and post counselling
    • Collaborating with the medical doctor and /or nurse in the management of Sexual Violence cases
    • Assessing the feasibility for referral of pregnant women form the TBAs to the OPD/MCH for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries.
    • Ensuring hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are met according to MSF specifications.
    • Performing cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual, protocols, and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
    • Guaranteeing a regular and ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for maternity activities (including monitoring/consumption control/ordering of orders.
    • Properly following up all newborn babies from delivery until discharge, informing mothers and relatives about importance of breast feeding, vaccination and possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
    • Ensuring patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected
    • Supervising that administrative procedures of admissions and hospitalizations comply with MSF protocols , as well as verify patients are properly informed and receive the documents required (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc.
    • Participate in the organisation of the ward in collaboration with other midwifes and the maternity ward supervisor. Ensure transfer of relevant information to the next shift team (specially identifying risk cases)
    • According to MSF protocols in force, conduct normal deliveries independently. Manage obstetric emergencies; identify cases needing referral and send them in time. Clean up the newborn, executing and registering first neo-natal medical acts (cutting and cleaning the umbilical cord, vaccination, etc.), detecting possible anomalies/infections and reporting them to the doctor, in order to ensure successful interventions.
    • Supervises the use of drugs, facilities and obstetric material, in order to ensure, in accordance with number of patients and prescriptions, a rational use. Ensure pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated, kept under appropriate conditions and above minimum safety point.
    • 1 BEmONC = basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care = Administration of antibiotics, oxytocic’s, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta, removal of retained products following abortion, assisted vaginal delivery, preferably with vacuum extractor and newborn care including neonatal resuscitation.
    • 2 CEmONC = comprehensive obstetric and neonatal care = the full package of BEmONC Plus; surgery (caesarean section, hysterectomy, laparotomy), safe blood transfusion and care to sick and low birth weight newborns

    MSF Section / Context Specific Accountabilities

    ANC/PNC:

    • The MW is the main responsible for the Ante and Post Natal care in the IDP camp covering Benue and middle belt states, and focal person for all related activities including referals and family planning.
    • Ensures routine screening, identification and treatment of common maternal morbidities while providing the routine medications during pregnancy and post-partum
    • Awareness on pregnancy ,delivery, and their complications , related health promotion, hygiene, nutrition and immunization.
    • Ensures the ANC/PNC area is cleaned and well equiped and supplied. Ensures sterilization of materials used in the ANC/PNC.
    • Ensures regular and ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for ANC/PNC activities (including monitoring/consumption control/ordering of orders)
    • Together with MOH Matron ensure registration of all new ANC in MOH Register.
    • Together with MoH Vaccinator ensure Pregnant women are vaccinated for routine vaccination (TT) including new born in PNC for their routine vaccines( Pentavalent , Measles, Meningitis…)
    • Ensure timely referal to secondary referal facilities any obstetric emergency after consultation with MWAM in the Clinic to assist those in need.
    • Ensure proper Filing of patient files( are well kept in a secured place)
    • Provide family planning services after counselling clients ,identify possible side effect and take action( either treat them , seek for advice or refer to the selected referal hospital.
    • Provide care in an eventual impromptu clinic delivery and ensure prompt referral to Daudu FSP if no complication for care.
    • Support the program of response to ASHC (Adolescent sexual health care) by providing general care needed.
    • Refer all ANC after last ANC visit to Daudu FSP for delivery.
    • Inform clients MSF services is only available from Monday to Friday during working hours. MSF team will not be in clinic during public holidays.

    SGBV Activities:

    • First line for SGBV activities for all women visiting the ASHC Clinic.
    • Support and promote SGBV activities in the IDP camp in collaboration with the SGBV focal person(Nurse).
    • Provide SGBV care to survivors coming to ANC/PNC(provide PEP, Psychosocial care,Antibiotics in case…) and inform the SGBV focal person for the next steps to take.
    • Ensure survivors followed in the IDP camps clinic are registrered in the central register
    • Inform the supervisor/SV focal person at all times where necessary regarding survivor care involving need for ToP, safety planning, contraception and referrals.
    • Be available for knowledge update about SV activities in the clinic.
    • Identifying and selective screening of survivors in the clinic.
    • Appropriate documentations, record keeping and storage of survivor data.

    STI clinic:

    • Identify and give treatment to patient according to guidelines.
    • Support the patient to bring onboard his/her partner.
    • Encourage the client adherence of the treatment.

    Others:

    • Perform their duties observing the MSF policies and in compliance with relevant SOPs of the department and immediately reporting to supervisor whenever compliance is or cannot be met.
    • Daily , Weekly and Monthly Reporting
    • Drug and Medical Item consumption and follow up
    • Cousel pregnant mothers on nutrition and right balanced diet.
    • Any other activity planned for IDPs
    • Assigned tasks/responsibilities may change or be added based on the changing project needs and strategy(can assigned in SRH pharmacy, triage by supervisor on need basis).

    Requirements (Qualifications):

    • Education: Essential midwifery qualification or specialization. Desired Bachelor in Midwifery
    • Experience: Essential working experience of at least two years in midwife activities related jobs.
    • Languages: Essential, mission language; local working language would be an asset.
    • Competencies: Results, Teamwork, Flexibility, Commitment, Service.
