    Ubuntu Security Manager

    Description

    • This is an opportunity to play a crucial role in shaping the security of Canonical and the whole open source community.
    • We are looking for people to help us grow and expand our security offering, and to help us make the world a safer place.
    • You will work alongside fantastic security professionals already onboard at Canonical, and share your time between contributing technically, and managing team members and projects.
    • The security team aims to provide a secure, stable service to our users and customers, and to enable them to reduce and manage their risk in an ever-changing landscape.
    • This role involves engaging directly with our community and customers, as well as coordinating efforts across multiple engineering teams and projects.
    • As an engineering manager at Canonical your primary responsibility is to the people you support: ensuring that they are growing as engineers, doing valuable work, and generally having a great time at Canonical.
    • As a lead for strong engineers, technical leadership and a solid background in software security is a must, so that you’re able to challenge and grow your team members.
    • You will have the opportunity to influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your team on strategy and execution.

    We have multiple management focus areas open for the Ubuntu security management role:

    • Security Maintenance (CVE and vulnerability addressing life cycle)
    • Security Technology (AppArmor, Secureboot, and Cryptography)
    • Certifications and Compliance (FIPS, CIS, FedRAMP)

    Key Responsibilities

    • Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers through hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback and hands-on career development
    • Guide the security posture for Ubuntu, and other Canonical products
    • Support timely delivery of technical solutions to address business needs
    • Manage competing priorities, communicating with internal and external stakeholders
    • Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices
    • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with the company values
    • Participate in strong engineering process through code and architectural review
    • Guide the growth of the Canonical Security story
    • Work from home with global travel up to 15% for internal and external events.

    Valued Skills and Experience

    • You have a Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
    • You love developing and growing people and have a strong track record of doing it
    • You are knowledgeable and passionate about software security, either Security Certifications or Application Security
    • You have some experience in leading, managing, coaching and mentoring software developers
    • You have solid experience working in an agile development environment
    • You have strong written and verbal technical communication skills.

    Security Engineer - Ubuntu

    Job Description

    • This is an exciting opportunity to join an industry leading software security team, and help protect the open source community and Ubuntu users from emerging threats.
    • Canonical is building a team to provide security coverage across a wide range of different ecosystems and environments, and work to make the world a better, safer place.
    • As part of the Ubuntu team, you will work with the best and brightest people in technology to monitor, triage, respond to and document new and existing vulnerabilities in open source software.
    • The role will involve collaboration with internal teams and external partners, to identify and prioritize issues and track progress.
    • The role can also include a number of other activities, including security assessment and code review, internal tooling developments, community engagement, security hardening and feature development and industry collaboration participation.
    • This job involves international travel several times a year, usually for one week and requires the ability to be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation.

    What you’ll do

    • Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in Ubuntu packages
    • Keep track of vulnerabilities in Ubuntu releases as they are discovered, researched and fixed (using internal software tools)
    • Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu community and with upstream developers where appropriate, to exchange or develop vulnerability patches and make sure that Ubuntu includes the very best security features
    • Audit source code for vulnerabilities.

    Who you are

    • You have a thorough understanding of the common categories of security vulnerabilities and techniques for fixing them
    • You are familiar with coordinated disclosure practices
    • You are familiar with open source development tools and methodologies
    • You are skilled in one or more of C, Python, go, Rust, Java, Ruby or PHP
    • You have excellent logic, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills
    • You can clearly and effectively communicate with the team and Ubuntu community members.
