    Protection Technical Assistant

    Role and Responsibilities

    • The purpose of the Protection Assistant position is to assist in the day-to-day implementation of protection activities in NRC.

    Generic Responsibilities (max 10):

    • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
    • Assist with the implementation of the support function portfolio according to a plan of action
    • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
    • Ensure proper filing of documents
    • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function
    • Ensure that procurement, development and distribution of materials and equipment are timely and in accordance with the procedures
    • Involve and inform communities and community leaders about the activities
    • Investigate and facilitate the introduction of new technology, method and approaches in order to improve the quality of the activities

    Specific Responsibilities
    Integrated Protection responsibilities:

    • Carry out regular visits to assigned field locations and identify protection needs of IDPs and host communities
    • Together with Protection Officers, the Assistants will be responsible for the implementation of protection activities on the field – protection analysis, case management, data collection, sensitization and monitoring of protection issues and referrals.
    • Contribute to the development of weekly and monthly work plans
    • Carry out the selection of project beneficiaries with a particular focus on the identification of vulnerabilities.
    • Data collection for project monitoring and evaluation.
    • Build capacity of NRC program and support teams on protection safe programming by conducting regular awareness raising sessions, inductions and support Core Protection training follow-up.
    • Participate in assessment and identification of protection gaps including GBV issues and support coordination with other protection actors to address those gaps
    • Identify vulnerable beneficiaries with special needs and suggest the best type of assistance for each individual case tailored to the specific needs of the case (safe referrals to specialized actors)

    Reporting:

    • Contribute in the implementation of protection activities according to strategy, proposals, budgets and plans
    • Keep accurate records of daily activities, beneficiaries involved, and issues identified. Regularly update program files and databases according to NRC’s Data Protection Policy and any other internal procedures that apply.

    Coordination:

    • Build strong working relationships with mandated and specialized protection actors
    • Proactively participate in regular program meetings and provide updates as appropriate.
    • Facilitate referral of protection issues to relevant service providers.
    • Ensure close coordination and communication with NRC’s Core Competency teams to encourage an integrated approach to program delivery;
    • Prepare weekly progress reports and other documents as required

    HR:

    • Comply with NRC’s Code of Conduct and PSEA principles at all times
    • Ensure adherence to NRC’s national staff policy guidelines

    Critical interfaces:

    • By interfaces, NRC means processes and projects that are interlinked with other departments/units or persons.
    • Relevant interfaces for this position are:
      • Strategy and project planning: Project Manager-Maiduguri, Project Coordinator
      • Area Operations: Finance Officer, Logistic Officer

    Scale and Scope of the Position:

    • Staff: None – but will lead community facilitators
    • Stakeholders: Community leaders, traditional and religious leaders
    • Budgets: None
    • Information: GORS, Agresso and Intranet
    • Legal or compliance: Term of Employment, Code of Conduct.

    Qualifications
    We are looking for: 

    • Bachelor's Degree
    • 2 years of experience from working in a protection role in an emergency or protracted crises settings
    • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts. Work experience in the Northeast is a plus.
    • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
    • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
    • Fluency in English & Hausa
    • Strong communication, coordination and representational skills.

    Protection Officer

    Job Identification Number: 7254

    Grade: 5 in NRC's grading structure
    Reporting line: Protection Coordinator

    Job Description

    • We are looking for people who are passionate about helping refugees and people forced to flee. 
    • If you are those people, the Norwegian Refugee Council in Nigeria is looking for an enthusiastic and passionate Protection Officer to join our protection team in Maiduguri Area Office
    • You will be responsible to Provide day-to-day support to program and support teams in Return, Host, and IDP communities to identify and remediate protection gaps and on a regular basis review NRC Vulnerability and targeting criteria by increasing the level of relevant skills and knowledge through the provision of a range of activities
    • To be successful in this role you will be a confident communicator with excellent relationship building skills, capable of establishing strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels while supporting new initiatives across the Area.

    Role Responsibilities 

    • Carry out regular visits to assigned field locations and collect information using NRC procedures and forms
    • Flag any immediate protection risks that arise during protection field visits to the Protection Manager 
    • Ensure space for focus groups is comfortable and appropriate for the group in question and ensure privacy for key informant interviews
    • Proactively engage with programme teams in the field to ensure safe programming tools are up to date and relevant to their needs level including designing and implementing the NRC referral pathway
    • Insert information on all referrals into Referral matrix and contribute to data analysis as appropriate, adhering to confidentiality and safety principles
    • Together with the PC, support programme safe programming initiatives and ensure protection Risk Assessments are core to all NRC’s Multi-sectoral assessment
    • Contribute to the design and planning of relevant trainings and awareness raising sessions for NRC staff, community members, LNGOs and duty bearers;
    • Build capacity of NRC programme and support teams on protection safe programming by conducting regular awareness raising sessions, inductions and support Core Protection training follow up.
    • Identify information needs of IDPs through visits to IDP camps, IDP interviews and focus group discussions
