    Volunteer UX Writer & Researcher

    Mandate

    • To enhance the performance and reliability of the ASR system and to create seamless, intuitive user experiences through our web application.
    • Farm Radio is looking for a UX Writer & Researcher to join our team and contribute to the design and enhancement of the Uliza web application.
    • The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of UX writing principles, combined with strong research skills to gather user insights and improve the overall user experience.

    Scope of Work
    During that time the volunteer will:

    • Craft clear, concise, and user-friendly copy for various parts of the web application, including onboarding processes, error messages, and instructional content.
    • Develop and maintain a consistent voice and tone that aligns with the brand and enhances the user experience.
    • Collaborate with designers and developers to ensure that copy is effectively integrated into the design and functionality of the application.
    • Conduct user research to gain insights into user needs, behaviors, and pain points related to ASR technology and the Uliza web application.
    • Use methods such as interviews, surveys, and usability testing to collect qualitative and quantitative data.
    • Analyze research findings to inform UX writing and design decisions.
    • Develop content strategies that support user goals and enhance the overall user experience.
    • Create content guidelines and standards to ensure consistency and quality across the application.
    • Work closely with the UI designer, product manager, and developers to align content with design and functionality.
    • Participate in brainstorming sessions, design reviews, and cross-functional team meetings to provide input on content and user experience.
    • Document research findings, content strategies, and writing guidelines.
    • Prepare reports and presentations to communicate research insights and content recommendations to stakeholders.

    Delivererables
    UX Copy:

    • Clear and user-friendly text for web application components, including buttons, labels, forms, error messages, and onboarding content.
    • Engaging and informative content for tutorials, help sections, and other user-facing elements.

    Research Reports:

    • Comprehensive reports summarizing user research findings, including insights into user behavior, needs, and preferences.
    • Actionable recommendations based on research to inform UX writing and design improvements.

    Content Strategy Documents:

    • Content strategy plans outlining the approach to creating, managing, and maintaining content across the application.

    Usability Testing Results:

    • Summaries of usability testing sessions, including identified issues, user feedback, and suggestions for content improvements.

    Content Guidelines & Best Practices:

    • Documentation of best practices for UX writing and content creation, tailored to the needs of the Uliza web application.

    Qualifications
    Required:

    • Able to work effectively in English
    • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communication, UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
    • Strong writing and editing skills, with a keen eye for detail and a knack for creating user-centered content.
    • Experience conducting user research and usability testing, with the ability to analyze and synthesize data into actionable insights.
    • Excellent intercultural communication skills.

    Expense:

    • FRI will cover costs related to the delivery of the volunteer assignment, including transportation and monthly stipends.

    Data Engineer Consultant for ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition)

    Scope of Work
    The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:

    • Data Management: Collect, clean, and preprocess audio and textual data to train and evaluate ASR models.
    • Data Pipeline Development: Design and implement scalable data pipelines to automate the extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of speech data.
    • Model Training: Work closely with the data science team to prepare data for training, validating, and testing ASR models.
    • Performance Monitoring: Monitor and analyze the performance of ASR models, including accuracy, latency, and error rates. Identify and address any data-related issues.
    • Integration: Collaborate with software developers to integrate ASR models into web applications, ensuring seamless functionality and optimal user experience.
    • Documentation: Create and maintain documentation related to data workflows, model performance, and integration processes.
    • Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams including product manager, UX/UI designers, and data scientists to align data engineering efforts with overall product goals.

    Deliverables
    Data Collection and Management:

    • Data collection scripts and tools for gathering speech and text data.
    • Clean and labeled datasets for training and evaluation purposes.
    • Data storage solutions with appropriate indexing and retrieval mechanisms.

    Data Pipeline Documentation:

    • Design documents for data pipelines, including flow diagrams and architecture.
    • Source code and configurations for ETL processes.

    Model Preparation:

    • Scripts and processes for preparing and augmenting data for ASR model training.
    • Documentation on dataset splits (training, validation, test).

    Model Performance Reports:

    • Performance metrics reports for ASR models, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores.
    • Analysis and troubleshooting reports on any data-related issues impacting model performance.

    Integration Documentation:

    • Integration guides and API documentation for incorporating ASR models into web applications.
    • Code samples and best practices for interacting with ASR services from web clients.

    User Feedback Analysis:

    • Reports and insights from user feedback related to ASR accuracy and usability.
    • Recommendations for improvements based on user feedback and performance data.

    Codebase and Version Control:

    • Version-controlled code repository for data processing scripts and pipeline implementations.
    • Regular updates and commits to the codebase reflecting ongoing improvements and bug fixes.

    Collaboration Reports:

    • Documentation of cross-functional team meetings and decisions.
    • Progress reports on collaborative projects involving ASR integration.

    Testing and Quality Assurance:

    • Test cases and results for ensuring data quality and model accuracy.
    • Documentation of QA processes and issues encountered during testing.

    Training and Support Materials:

    • Training materials and documentation for team members on data handling, model integration, and troubleshooting.

    Duration and Timeline:

    • The consultancy will commence in October 2024 and conclude in August 2025 with a maximum level of effect (LoE) of 80 days.
    • Specific deliverable deadlines will be agreed upon at the start of the consultancy.

    Reporting:

    • The consultant will report to the Project Manager Nathaniel Ofori and provide regular updates on progress.
    • Weekly meetings will be held to discuss challenges, milestones, and next steps.

    Volunteer UI Designer

    Delivererables
    UI Designs:

    • High-fidelity mockups for web application screens, including interactive elements, icons, and other UI components.
    • Prototypes demonstrating user flows and interactions within the application.

    Wireframes & User Flows:

    • Low-fidelity wireframes outlining the layout and structure of the application.
    • User flows detailing the steps users take to accomplish tasks within the application.

    Design Documentation:

    • Design specifications and guidelines for developers, including color schemes, typography, and spacing.
    • Documentation of user research findings and usability test results.

    Design System:

    • A comprehensive design system including reusable components, style guides, and patterns specific to the Uliza application.

    Usability Reports:

    • Reports summarizing usability testing results and providing actionable recommendations for design improvements.

    Qualifications
    Required:

    • Able to work effectively in English
    • Proven experience as a UI Designer, with a portfolio showcasing your work on web applications, preferably in the tech or ASR space.
    • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or similar.
    • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and best practices for web applications.
    • Experience with usability testing and user research methodologies.
    • Strong experience in training and facilitation
    • Excellent intercultural communication skills.

    Expense:

    • FRI will cover costs related to the delivery of the volunteer assignment, including transportation and monthly stipends.
